Scheduling Algorithms for TDMA Wireless Multihop Networks Petar Djukic Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering University of Toronto 2008 Current and future wireless standards use TDMA to provide guaranteed Quality-ofService (QoS) in the network. While these standards specify how transmissions should occur, they do not discuss scheduling algorithms to find when transmissions should occur (transmission schedules). Despite the technological advances, the question of finding transmission schedules has existed for the past twenty years without a satisfactory answer. This thesis presents a new class of scheduling algorithms for Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) wireless multihop networks. These algorithms have three major advantages. First, they take into account overhead and delay. With reduced overhead, transmission schedules have much higher throughput than what is possible with previous approaches. The algorithms can also be customized to produce schedules with specific delay properties. Scheduling to achieve a specific delay opens up a new dimension in wireless scheduling that was previously not possible. Second, the algorithms provide a simple and computationally efficient way to specify exact constraints on end-to-end flows in the network. These constraints provide us with a way to solve two important cross-layer design problems in TDMA wireless multihop networks. Third, the algorithms can be distributed in a very natural way. The distributed versions of the algorithms achieve the same performance as the centralized algorithms. The practical value of the algorithms is shown by simulating their usage in two different types TDMA wireless multihop networks.

Joint Rate Control and Scheduling for TDMA Multihop Wireless Networks
We solve the joint rate control and scheduling problem in TDMA wireless networks. We use the Lagrangian dual approach to devise an iterative subgradient algorithm that solves the problem. The iterative algorithm decomposes the problem into the distributed rate control problem and centralized TDMA scheduling. The distributed rate control can be determined independently by wireless nodes in the n...
متن کاملBroadcast scheduling in wireless multihop networks using a neural-network-based hybrid algorithm
In wireless multihop networks, the objective of the broadcast scheduling problem is to find a conflict free transmission schedule for each node at different time slots in a fixed length time cycle, called TDMA cycle. The optimization criterion is to find an optimal TDMA schedule with minimal TDMA cycle length and maximal node transmissions. In this paper we propose a two-stage hybrid method to ...

Wireless multihop networks have recently been conceived as a networking paradigm. Several algorithms may be found in the literature for scheduling TDMA transmissions for these networks. These algorithms try to determine the optimal scheduling, in order to increase the capacity and reduce the delay for a given network topology. However, to our best knowledge, no TDMA scheduling algorithms have b...

We propose novel strategies for end-to-end reliability-aware scheduling in Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks (IWSNs). Because of stringent reliability requirements in industrial applications where missed packets may have disastrous or lethal consequences, all IWSN communication standards are based on Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), allowing for deterministic channel access on theMAC lay...
